NAI’s Customized Cranes Are the Perfect Solution for Difficult Bridge Work
May 2006
Standard cranes and “off the shelf” material handling equipment will not suffice for bridge work. One must consider weather conditions, power source, limited area, and inclines among other things. Trumbull Corp., a large general contractor in Pennsylvania, turned to NAI to design a crane that would take into consideration all these factors and allow Trumbull to rebuild bridges on the Ohio River.
The crane recently constructed by NAI for Trumbull Corp. allows loads to pass through the legs of the crane and was built with the ability to handle a 4 degree incline. The material handling system also featured a self powered generator and an adjustable span so that it could be used for several projects. Naturally, the crane was also specialized for outdoor conditions. Services provided by NAI included design, production, and installation.
NAI previously worked with Trumbull providing a material handling solution for the I-81 work in Harrisburg PA; the crane solution and bridge project was featured in the July 2003 issue of Constructioneer. North American Industries also built the cranes used to work on the Bronx Whitestone Bridge and the Queens Boulevard Bridge, both located in NY.
