NAI Cranes Lend Major Support to Bridge Resurfacing Project
June 2005
When it became necessary that the Bronx Whitestone Bridge in New York be resurfaced, Perini Corporation and O&G in a joint venture, turned to North American Industries (NAI). Having previously worked with NAI, Perini had the confidence that NAI could determine, design, and manufacture the type of lifting system appropriate for the complex project.
Because equipment had to be moved from one side of the bridge to the other as the project progressed, NAI expertly engineered four 30 ton gantry cranes, each with a 71 foot span. Even more impressive was NAI’s ability to make the cranes self-powered by incorporating a self-contained generator to ride on each crane. This allowed the cranes to work successfully in outdoor conditions on the bridge.
The reliability of the cranes meant that delays related to the functioning of the lifting system were avoided. This was crucial in order to finish the project in a timely manner and restore normal traffic flow. NAI was also readily available to support Perini with operation instruction and customer service 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
