North American Industries Supplies Cranes to Power Plant
Crane Builder Adds To Its Resume of ‘Green’ Energy Projects
September, 2010
Woburn, Massachusetts - North American Industries (NAI) designed, built, supervised installation of and commissioned two bridge cranes for a new power plant in Rensselaer, New York. The 635 megawatt combined cycle, natural gas-fired power plant is owned by Empire Generating Co, LLC and is among the cleanest-burning and lowest noise-producing of comparable plants in the U.S. The project is expected to cost over $700 million.
NAI manufactured, designed, supervised installation of and commissioned two top running bridge cranes in the new facility. The first is a 65-foot span, double girder crane with a 60-ton main hoist and a 20-ton auxiliary hoist that traverse on a common trolley. The other is a 96-foot span, double girder crane with a 60-ton main hoist and a 20-ton auxiliary hoist that traverse on a common trolley. These cranes will be used for routine cleaning and maintenance of the turbines.
John Wanalista, Project Manager of CH2M Hill states, “Working with North American Industries has been an excellent experience. We needed the overhead cranes to be designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned to precise specifications, and NAI’s team exceeded our expectations. NAI supported last-minute changes in shipping, installation and commissioning schedules and accommodated our requests without hesitation. We look forward to working with NAI on our next project.”
“The CH2M Hill/Empire Generating project is part of the next generation, energy-efficient power plants, and we were pleased to be part of it. It allowed us to add to our already-long list of work in the growing ‘green’ energy industry”, said George Wheelwright, Sales Manager of North American Industries. He added, “Installation of the cranes and its components went smoothly because we were able to work so closely with the Project’s engineering team. We look forward to working on more power plant projects in the future.”
