The hoist is the component of the crane that moves loads vertically. It is mounted to a trolley and travels along one or more horizontal beams, called cross girders, to move the hoist from side-to-side (between the runways). Hoists generally are available with single hooks standard, but many choices exist for ‘below-the-hook’ devices to accommodate specialty lifting requirements.
Hoists are available in two basic designs: chain and wire rope. Hoists can be hand-operated or powered electrically or pneumatically.
Much like crane systems, hoists are rated according to duty cycle by the Hoist Manufacturers Institute (HMI).
